Miramar College Student Named Coca-Cola Scholar

Miramar College student Sonya Shafir was named a 2023 Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar and received a $1,000 scholarship.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver, and 50 Bronze Scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each scholar also receives a commemorative medallion. Students are nominated for the academic team by their college administrators. Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership, and engagement in college and community service.

Shafir is the child of Ukrainian Jewish refugees. The first generation American is in her second year at Miramar College studying Human Biology. Shafir is planning to transfer to either UCLA or UC San Diego in the fall. The Westview High School graduate plans to attend medical school and become a physician with a specialization in gynecology/fertility.

Shafir is the president of Miramar College's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. She also serves as the vice president of the Biology Club.  

Coca-Cola Academic Team members will be recognized in both local and statewide ceremonies and will also be recognized internationally during Phi Theta Kappa’s annual convention, PTK Catalyst, held in Columbus, Ohio, April 20-22.
