About TRIO
The TRIO/Student Support Services Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education with a mission
to provide educational advancement opportunities for underrepresented students. The program assists students with academic preparation, personal skill development and the transfer process.
TRIO/SSS serves to support students through the successful transfer from Miramar College to a 4-year institution and towards the completion of a Bachelors degree and beyond.
The goal of TRIO/SSS is to provide programs and services that focus on a holistic approach to student development and student success. Students will gain the knowledge and skills to be in control of their educational goals and transition from one level of higher education to the next.
Services Provided
- Academic, transfer, career, financial aid/scholarship, and personal counseling by a dedicated full-time TRIO/SSS staff
- Specialized academic success programs such as tutoring (through the PLACe), academic workshops, Supplemental Instruction for historically difficuly classes, writing and English conversation programs
- Personal growth and skill development seminars
- Comprehensive college search assistance, including meetings with college representatives and field trips to 4-year institutions
- Educational and cultural activities to meet new friends, faculty and staff
- Complimentary office services (i.e., copies, faxes, computer usage, etc.)
- Complimentary school supplies (i.e., scantrons, bluebooks, highlighter, pens, etc.)
Eligibility Requirements
Students who are interested in receiving services from the TRIO/SSS Program must submit a completed application and meet at least >ONE of the following eligibility requirements set forth under Title IV of the Higher Education Act:
- Be a first-generation college student (neither of your parents graduated from a U.S. four-year institution)
- Be a low-income college student (based on the income levels set forth by the U.S. Department of Education and verified by an income tax return)
- Have a verified disability
Other factors that will be taken into consideration include an educational goal to transfer to a 4-year university, need for academic and personal preparation, and a commitment to fulfill all requirements of the program.
