Application for VA Benefits

FOR UP TO DATE INFORMATION REGARDING THE POST 9/11 'NEW GI BILL' CLICK HERE

NEW STUDENTS:
All new students (Recent active duty military (CH:30/34, Reservists (CH:1606/1607), applying for their Montgomery GI Bill need to complete & submit the following application to the Veterans Affairs office (22-1990).

    What to bring to the VA office to initiate your VA Benefits
  • Valid Student Identification card (CSID card)
  • Voided check (to establish direct deposit, if requested. Not available for CH.35 students)
  • Counseling Memo form (Obtainable in the Veterans Affairs Office)
  • Miramar College Computerized Student Education Plan (Obtainable in Counseling office)
  • Official (sealed & unopened) copies of transcripts from prior institutions (if applicable)
  • A copy of your current schedule (You must be OFFICIALLY REGISTERED in classes to begin the process)
  • Math and assessment tests complete (if no math or English classes have been taken. Contact Assessment office for more details)
  • Any required documentation listed below depending on whichever applicable benefit:
CH:30
(Active Duty)
  • DD214 (Member 4 copy)
  • $600.00 Cash Voucher or the Last Leave & Earnings Statement (if applicable)
  • College Fund Kicker documentation (if applicable)
CH: 31
(Vocational Rehab)
    Call the Veterans Affairs office to ensure a valid 28-1905 is on file (sent to the school from the Vocational Rehab counselor)
  • DD-214 (Member 4 copy)
  • Come to the Veterans Affairs Office to complete "Authorization to pay" forms
CH:34
(Post Vietnam Era)
  • Form 686c Declaration of Dependents*
  • Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
  • Birth Certificates of all dependent child under the age of 18
  • Form 21-674 Request for approval of School Attendance (for any child over 18 attending college)*
CH:1606
(Selected Reserve)
  • College Fund Kicker Documentation (if applicable)
  • DD Form 2384-1 Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE)
  • DD214 (Member 4 copy)
CH: 1607
(Reserve Educational
Assistance Program)
    **NOTE** YOU MUST MARK THE BOX 1607 ON THE ORIGINAL APPLICATION IF YOU ARE APPLYING FOR THIS BENEFIT**
  • College Fund (Kicker) Documentation (if applicable)
  • DD Form 2384-1

*these forms are available in the Veterans Affairs office

Please Note: It takes 4 to 6 weeks for the VA Regional Office to process educational benefits. Payments are made retroactive to the beginning of the semester. All applicable classes (used for GI Bill Payment purposes) MUST fit on an appropriate Student education plan, obtainable in the counseling office. Please plan accordingly, so as to NOT find yourself in a financial hardship.
