Nick joined San Diego Miramar College as Athletic Director in 2005. In the spring of 2006 Miramar was given the approval to start a men’s basketball program. Under Nick’s leadership, the 2006-2007 season showcased the first-ever men’s basketball team in the history of the college.
In the fall of 2000, Nick accepted the Head Men’s Basketball coaching position at Imperial Valley College and spent five seasons rebuilding the men’s basketball program, developing and implementing summer basketball camps for youth through high school age boys and girls, and developing an Imperial County High School All-Star Basketball Game. In 2004, Nick was named the Pacific Coast Conference Coach of the Year.
Nick Began his coaching career as an Assistant Coach at Palomar College, followed by five years as an Assistant Coach at Mira Costa College (1994-1999), mentoring under longtime head coach and California Community College Hall-of-Famer, Clete Adelman. For the 1999-2000 season, Nick worked at the University of California, Irvine, under Head Coach Pat Douglass who previously led California State University Bakersfield to three NCAA Division II titles.
Athletic Director and Head Coach Nick Gehler was born into a military family. After years of moving around the world, he graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in San Diego, California. Nick played collegiate basketball at Palomar College and the University of Northern Colorado.
Nick earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from California State University San Marcos and a master’s in health, physical education and recreation from Saint Mary’s College of California. Nick and wife Tara live in Rancho Bernardo and are the proud parents of daughter Bailey, 7 years old, and son Charlie, 4 years old.
