Fire Prevention

The Associate of Science Degree in Fire Prevention offered through San Diego Miramar College provides a clear guided pathway to meet the requirements to work in the fire prevention field.  Miramar Fire Technology is an Accredited Regional Training Program (ARTP) through State Fire Training. The National Fire Protection Association Standards for fire prevention requirements are directly embedded into the Fire Technology Degree and Certificate of Achievement.

The Fire Prevention Degree has been closely coordinated between our agency stakeholders, including San Diego Fire Rescue Department, Cal Fire San Diego, San Diego County Fire Authority and Heartland Fire Training.  The Degree & Certificate program is approved through California State Fire Training, so not only will the graduates of the program earn their degree, but will be ready to meet the challenges facing professionals in the fire service focusing on fire prevention, fire inspections, code enforcement, weed abatement, and other prevention specialties.

Students who are interested in positions as Fire Inspectors and would like more specific information, please complete the Fire Prevention Interest Form. This will be used to advertise classes and fire inspector openings.

The State Fire Marshal Courses are offered in the Fall Semester of each year:

FIPT 351A Fire Inspector 1A - Duties and Responsibilities

FIPT 351B Fire Inspector 1B - Fire and Life Safety

FIPT 351C Fire Inspector 1C - Field Inspection

FIPT 351D Fire Inspector 1D - Field Inspection - CA Specific

During Spring Semesters and based on student interest and needs, students who completed ALL of the Fire Marshal courses are eligible for work experience (Internships - in several cases) working a variety of Fire Prevention Bureaus throughout San Diego County to complete the requirements for the Fire Inspector Task book. Miramar Fire Technology has partnered with several agencies for opportunities for work experience.
