First Year Experience Program

What It Is

The goal of the First Year Experience Program (FYE) is to provide an efficient, supportive process for eligible freshmen to make a seamless transition from high school to college.  With student success as its main goal, the program will focus on helping students to become aware of, and to make effective use of campus resources.  Additionally, the program will provide students with information and tools necessary to progress successfully towards their degree objectives.  Services offered through the program include:

  • An 8-week Summer Bridge program to strengthen academic preparation in basic skills reading, writing and study skills
  • Priority registration for the Fall and Spring semester of the first year
  • One-on-one counseling appointments and educational planning
  • Student success peer support
  • Special activities and events throughout the year 

Why You Should Do It

Students participating in this program will be prepared to “hit the ground running” during their first semester at Miramar College.    

Who Is Eligible To Participate

You are eligible for the First Year Experience (FYE) Program if you meet and complete the following requirements:

1)  Have a high school diploma/GED or you're 18 years of age

2)  Never previously attended college

3)  First Generation College Student (Parents do not have a 4-year college degree)

4)  Take Math and English assessment exams (Miramar College only)

5)  Place into English basic skill levels

6)  Commit to the program and requirements for the entire year

7)  Complete the FYE Summer Bridge Program prior to the Fall semester 

8)  Be a full-time student (12 or more semester units) during the fall and spring semester.

2 Apply online to SDCCD Mon, June 2, 2014 6pm
3 Take Miramar Assessment Test. Mon, June 2, 2014 6pm
4 Go to to print aud complete the FYE New Student Experience Agreement and submit to Counseling or Outreach Department. Must also submit copy of Miramar (or other local community college) Assessment Scores. SAT, AP, ACT scores may be used in place of assessment but must be officially submitted to the District Office. Please visit the assessment website for acceptable scores and details for score submission. Contract available March 2014 Mon, June 2, 2014 6pm
5 RSVP online at to attend our annual Jets Jump Start Orientation. May 1-June 6, 2014

Attend the Jets Jump Start Orientation.

June 17, 18 or 19, 2014
7 Sign up for a FYE Educational Planning Session after attending Jets Jump Start.  Details will be provided at the event.  June 17, 18 or 19, 2014
8 Attend FYE Educational Planning Session followed by a Student Services Campus Tour. Sessions are June 23–30, 2014
9 Register for Fall classes through Reg-e (Online Registration System). Lab assistance is available to help you register. Early July 2014
10 Pay for classes and submit final schedule to Counseling or you will be dropped from all your courses and lose priority registration. Mid-July 2014
