After taking home Gold in the SkillsUSA California diesel competition back in April, San Diego Miramar College student Julian Hoefert will travel to Louisville, KY to take part in the National Championships. The 21-year old Hilltop High school graduate will be in Kentucky June 22 and June 23 to compete in the diesel technology finals. “It’s such a shock that I advanced this far, that I really don’t have any expectations for the competition,” said Hoefert. “I am honored to have this opportunity to participate and I hope I do well.” Hoefert qualified for nationals after placing first at the 50th annual SkillsUSA California Automotive Service and Heavy Equipment Technology State Finals April 22 hosted by San Diego Miramar College. When he arrives in Louisville, Hoefert will compete in the following stations: welding, a/c, engine diagnosis, electrical, manual transmission, chassis, preventive maintenance, resume/ job interview, differential, hydraulics, air brakes, measuring tools, failure analysis. “I am excited, but nervous,” admits Hoefert, who is pursuing his associate of science degree in Diesel Equipment Technology. “I have a short term goal of graduating with my degree and moving to either Oregon or Arizona to pursue a career in the industry. Long term, I hope to open my own owner/operator diesel business.” The winners at Nationals receive prize money and tools. “I would really love to win those the tools to be honest,” said Hoefert. Hoefert is being sponsored by Hawthorne Machinery Company which will cover his expenses for Nationals. Dan Wilkie, professor of Diesel Technology at San Diego Miramar College will accompany Hoefert to Louisville. The SkillsUSA Championships is a showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. “SkillsUSA is a contest that reaffirms why CTE programs are an important aspect of today’s educational landscape,” said Professor Dan Willkie, Diesel Technology department chair. “Students compete in their chosen areas, they demonstrate both manipulative, and critical thinking skills by performing tasks that are common place in their areas of specialty.” The SkillsUSA Championships will be held on Wednesday, June 22 and Thursday, June 23. More than 6,000 outstanding career and technical education students - all state contest winners - will compete hands-on in 100 different trade, technical and leadership fields. Students work against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in occupations such as electronics, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, medical assisting and culinary arts. Contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations and labor organizations, and test competencies are set by industry. Leadership contestants will demonstrate skills including extemporaneous speaking and conducting meetings by parliamentary procedure.
