Miramar College is offering dozens of 1, 5, 8, 9, 11 and 12 week courses that begin mid-semester. Several of the classes are offered on campus and online. The first starting date is Feb. 21. Additional sessions begin on Feb. 27., March 6, March 20 and April 3. Enrollment is open now at Reg-e or by visiting the Admissions Office located in the Student Services Building. Keep in mind, Reg-e will be closed from Feb. 17 through Feb. 20 for the President's Day holiday weekend, March 31 and April 1. You can find a late start class by visiting schedule.sdccd.edu.

After a few months of construction, the Miramar College Driveway entrance to campus off of Black Mountain Road is back open. The entrance reopened on Feb. 6. The timing couldn’t have been worse. Shortly before he was set to begin college, Dillon McIntire’s learned his parents had lost their job and would be moving to the Midwest. That’s when he heard about the San Diego Promise, the San Diego Community College District’s groundbreaking free college program.
Now he’s at Miramar College studying to become a firefighter.
“This financial support is everything to me right now,” McIntire said. “To be able to get financial aid and still be able to pursue the career I wanted is so much to me.

That was the reaction from University City resident Hilda Arreola when she heard about the San Diego Promise program, which pays for enrollment fees and books that are not covered by financial aid.
“The Promise is a fantastic program,” said Arreola, the mother of two children and who is in the Paralegal Program at Miramar College.

The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has honored San Diego Miramar College’s Javan Perry, whose team has won six games in a row and 10 of its last 11 games, as Men’s Athlete of the Week.
Perry, a 6-foot-0 sophomore guard from Hall High School in Little Rock, Arkansas and the Jets’ leading scorer with a 14.1-point average, scored 11 points and also had 6 rebounds and 4 assists as Miramar opened the round-robin Imperial Valley College Holiday Classic by defeating Pasadena City College 76-68.
He grabbed 5 rebounds and dished off 6 assists in the Jets’ 84-72 second-day victory over Los Angeles

The Miramar College Foundation received a $3,000.00 donation from Cal Coast Credit Union at its Dec. 9 board meeting. The money will be used to support Miramar College students through the Miramar College Foundation. In addition, Cal Coast has committed to funding four $500.00 scholarships for eligible Miramar College students during the Spring 2017 and Fall 2018 semesters. Open registration for the spring 2017 semester has begun at the San Diego Community College District. The 16-week semester for Miramar College starts January 30 and ends May 27.
In response to student demand, the district has added 134 class sections from last spring. Emphasis has been placed on providing math and English classes, which are among those most in need. In addition, the number of online courses being offered is up 14 percent.

The San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees approved a $200,000 grant for Miramar College that will be used to support Innovations and Effectiveness as it relates to enrollment management. The approval came at the Board’s Dec. 8, 2016 meeting. The Institutional Effectiveness Partnership Initiative (IEPI) grant is awarded through the Santa Clarita Community College District.
The funds will be used to strategically integrate enrollment management into the College’s Student Success Model.

This past July, Miramar College alum and current staff member Kaanchan Farkiya won the honor in Las Vegas. "I am out there doing my duties now as Queen and my platform is education and helping children, so it is natural fit to be affiliated with Miramar College's Child Development Center." San Diego Miramar College has received a $20,000.00 grant from San Diego Gas and Electric to fund its Vets-2-Jets program.
Miramar College created the Vets-2-Jets program to remove the financial barriers that negatively impact the academic success of disabled Veterans. Through the career placement center, the program is able to assist Veterans, who have a 20 percent or greater VA disability rating, with text book assistance, laptops for loan, and at times help with utility bills, housing and transportation needs.

For those traveling north bound on Black Mountain Road, you will be directed to enter the campus just north of parking lot 2. The General Automotive Technology Program at San Diego Miramar College has received accreditation by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). The accreditation period runs through 2021. This is the second automotive technology program at Miramar College to secure NATEF accreditation. The Honda PACT/Toyota T-Ten program received its NATEF accreditation four years ago.
To achieve this coveted recognition, the school's automotive technology program underwent rigorous evaluation by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF).

San Diego Miramar College student Thaimae Le has been awarded a 2016 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. Le is one of only 75 community college students, from a nationwide pool of 2,400 applicants, selected for this honor. Newly appointed San Diego Fire and Rescue Chief Brian Fennessy has been selected to deliver the keynote address during San Diego Miramar College’s commencement ceremony. Hundreds of graduates will participate in the May 13 ceremony on campus.
Chief Fennessy graduated from the October 1990 Fire Academy at Miramar College and progressed through the ranks of the Department. He was named the city’s 17th fire chief on November 12, 2015.

San Diego Miramar College will host its largest-ever commencement ceremony on May 13 with 291 students confirmed to attend. Commencement exercises will be held inside Hourglass Fieldhouse on the Miramar College campus from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The San Diego Community College District (SDCCD)--which has seen a 45 percent increase in degrees conferred since 2014--kicks off its spring commencement ceremonies May 13 at San Diego Miramar College.
A record 3,500 Associate Degrees are being awarded this spring by San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, and San Diego Miramar College. The total represents a nearly 7 percent increase from the number of degrees awarded last year, and a 45 percent increase from the 2,414 degrees awarded in 2014.

San Diego Miramar College's state-of-the-art Fire Technology and Emergency Medical Technology facility will serve as a Candidate Physical Ability Testing (CPAT) center thanks to a $44,000.00 Neighborhood Reinvestment Program Grant provided by the County of San Diego. Previously, firefighter candidates had to travel to Orange County or Sacramento to undergo their mandatory CPAT training. San Diego Miramar College's Administration building has been awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for sustainable design by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Miramar College student Tevin Nixon has joined Delta Airlines on a paid internship. He is currently working nights at Lindbergh Field under the direct supervision of Delta mechanics. The 22 year-old began taking courses at Miramar College in Fall of 2011 and will graduate later this month. Nixon is studying aircraft maintenance.
Nixon recently completed a vigorous employment process to become Miramar’s first intern selected from the aviation program to join the Delta Airlines Intern Program.

The grand opening ceremony of the San Diego Miramar College Science Building Addition is the latest facility funded by the San Diego Community College District’s (SDCCD) $1.555 billion Propositions S and N construction bond program. An energetic crowd of faculty, staff, students, and representatives from the SDCCD turned out Monday for the ceremonial ribbon cutting of the two-story, 49,000-square-foot building.

The San Diego Section of the American Chemical Society has selected Dr. Linda Woods for its 2015 Outstanding Chemistry Educator Award. Dr. Woods will be honored at the 2015 Distinguished Scientist Award Banquet on Oct. 22 at The Ida and Cecil Green Faculty Club on the campus of University of California-San Diego.

The San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) has designated October as Transfer Awareness Month to align with the transfer application periods of many public universities, scheduling an array of workshops and information fairs as part of an ongoing effort to help students interested in transferring to four-year colleges and universities.
The priority enrollment period for fall 2016 opened Oct. 1 for California State University (CSU) campuses and opens Nov. 1 for University of California campuses. The application deadline for both systems is Nov.

San Diego Miramar College has launched a 15-unit dual enrollment business program at Scripps Ranch High School. Sixty-three high school juniors are currently enrolled in the program which began September 8. Classes are taught on the Scripps Ranch High School campus by Miramar College faculty.
“This is a unique dual enrollment program,” said David Wilhelm, assistant professor in the Department of Business at Miramar College.

The northwest corner of San Diego Miramar College (Black Mountain Road & Hillery Drive) will be getting “in touch” with its wildlife side over the fall 2015 semester. Beginning in mid-August, the 12-acre parcel will be transformed into a landscape featuring vernal pools and interpretive trails. This section of land is home to the federally protected San Diego Fairy Shrimp, which is a soft bodied crustacean that is less than an inch long when fully grown. The endangered San Diego Mesa Mint plant also grows on the land.

Dr. Paulette Hopkins has been elevated from acting vice president of instruction to interim vice president of instruction, effective July 1. Dr. Hopkins will also continue to serve as dean of Miramar College’s School of Math, Biological, Exercise & Physical Sciences, a position she has held since 2008.
"Over the past six weeks, Dr. Hopkins has served as acting VPI and demonstrated tremendous leadership while at the post,” said Dr. Patricia Hsieh, president of San Diego Miramar College.

Some three dozen high school students from throughout San Diego County begin this week on an intensive eight-week program that includes hands-on research at The Scripps Research Institute, The Salk Institute, and UC San Diego. The annual Life Science Summer Institute (LSSI) began Monday with Bootcamp, one-week, pre-internship laboratory training program at San Diego Miramar College and Grossmont College in El Cajon.

July 18, 2014 began as any ordinary day for Miramar College Fire Technology students Phillip Mainini and Brendon Simmons. The two had just completed rappelling exercises and were headed home when Mainini spotted a man in the parking lot of the Point Loma Home Depot threatening to douse himself with gasoline and then set fire.
Mainini attempted to talk the man out of his attempted suicide, but the man quickly lit fire to himself. Mainini quickly took a blanket from a nearby onlooker and smothered the man’s face in an attempt to keep his airway open.

San Diego Miramar College has received a renewal of four grants and three augmentations from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) Economic and Workforce Development Program totaling $1,375,000.00. The American Society of Civil Engineers has selected the Fire Technology and EMT Training Facility at San Diego Miramar College as "Outstanding Project" in the Architectural Engineering Project category for 2015. The announcement was made on May 15 at the Civil Engineering Project Awards program in San Diego.
Opened in fall of 2014, The Miramar Fire Technology & EMT Training Center is a 26,000-gross-square-foot, four building complex located on two-acres near the north side of campus. Its architect is gkkworks, with structural engineering provided by KPFF Consulting Engineers.

With a spring storm expected to bring heavy rain and winds to the area on Friday, May 15, San Diego Miramar College has decided to move its 2015 Commencement Ceremony indoors for the safety and comfort of our graduates, guests, faculty, and staff.
Commencement will now be held inside Hourglass Fieldhouse/Gym, located on the south end of campus. (See attached map). Commencement will begin at 1 p.m.
Graduation orientation will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the cafeteria of the K-building.

San Diego Miramar College has seen a 35 percent increase in the number of degrees conferred over last year. Seven-hundred and fifty-five associate degrees have been earned by Miramar College students in 2015, an increase of 196 over the previous year. The College will also confer 430 certificates of education.

San Diego Miramar College head women’s soccer coach Sean Bowers has been named the 2014-2015 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Female Sport Coach of the Year. This is the third year in a row that Bowers has won the honor, but his first outright honor.
This past season, Bowers led the Lady Jets to a 17-3-2 record, a PCAC title, and a berth in the state quarterfinals. The Lady Jets finished the 2014 season ranked 3rd in southern California, 5th in the state, and 18th nationally. Under his direction, the Jets featured seven 1st Team All-Conference players and the PCAC’s Defender of the Year.

San Diego Miramar College student Colin Skinner has been awarded a 2015 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. The 30-year old is one of 90 community college students from across the country to win this honor. The scholarship is for up to $40,000.00 per year and is intended to cover a significant share of the student’s educational expenses-including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees-for the final two to three years necessary to achieve a bachelor’s degree at a 4-year college or university.

The 2014-2015 athletic year began with a 5th consecutive women’s soccer conference championship and ended with the debut of a men’s volleyball program for the first time in school history. On April 22 at the San Diego Hall of Champions, Miramar’s student-athletes gathered to celebrate their accomplishments in both the classroom and in athletics.
“We have come a long way since we first instituted intercollegiate athletics in the fall of 2000,” said Nick Gehler, athletic director and head men’s basketball coach at San Diego Miramar College.

In 2015, the Miramar College Foundation awarded 41 scholarships to 166 recipients totaling $74,300.00. An additional 57 external awards, totaling $76,860.00, were presented at Scholar Fest bringing the grand total to $151,160.00.

Colin Skinner, a student at San Diego Miramar College, has been named to the All-California Academic 2nd team by Phi Theta Kappa. The announcement was made on April 7 at the 2015 Phi Theta Kappa All-California Community College Academic Team Awards luncheon in Sacramento. The awards are presented by the Community College League of California.

Miramar College's Automotive and Diesel Departments will host the 48th annual SkillsUSA California Automotive Service and Heavy Equipment State Finals on April 11 on campus. Fifty-three students are expected to take part in the skills challenge with the winners advancing to Louisville, KY for the national finals on June 24-25.

Miramar College student Jocelyn-Marie Felicano and adjunct professor Jeff McKendricks have been recognized by the Society of Anthropology in Community Colleges (SACC).
Felicano recently received the Student Award for Leadership, Creativity, and Community Service. McKendricks won 2015 Teacher of the Year.

The Child Development Center at San Diego Miramar College had its National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation reaffirmed for a five-year term that runs through January 1, 2019.
