At their first meeting of the academic year, the Miramar College Foundation board voted to support the development of the campus Organic Garden with a donation of $1,000. Seven Miramar students were among 43 SDCCD students who were awarded scholarships from the California Community Colleges Scholarship Endowment – just 15 months after its formation. The endowment distributed 1,250 scholarships at $500 each among the state’s 110 community colleges, helping students pay for books, lab fees, uniforms, transportation and other educational expenses. A second installment of the same amount will be distributed for the Spring 2010 semester, providing a total of $1.25 million during this academic year.

Scholar Fest Celebrates Student Achievement, Foundation Donors and VIPs
More than 69 scholarships valued at over $50,000 were awarded to Miramar College and local high school students during the college’s 15th annual scholarship program on April 30, 2009.
Sponsored by the Miramar College Foundation, a VIP Donor Recognition event preceded the scholarship awards, to recognize donors who contributed to the Foundation during the prior year. Special recognition was bestowed upon Brian Maienschein -- former San Diego City Councilmember (2000-2008), for his record of exemplary support of the Foundation, public safety, City/College partnerships, and the community-at-large. Howard Schuler of Fallbrook was recognized for his service on the Foundation board of directors for more than eight years. Event sponsors included USE Credit Union, AFT Local 1931, SDCCD Chancellor Constance Carroll, and Miramar College Foundation directors Bob Dingeman and Tony Pizarro. Entertainment was provided by The Latin Jazz Trio, featuring Miramar College music professor Channing Booth
