Graduation Timeline & Information


Before You Graduate

  • Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation for students completing an Associate Degree for Transfer and transferring to a CSU in the fall of 2014 is February 13.
  • Deadline to file a petition and have your name appear in the official Commencement Program March 31st
  • Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation is April 30, 2014.
    • (Petitions filed after April 30 will become Summer Graduates)
  • Students must meet with a Miramar College Counselor and have an official education plan on file prior to submitting the petition.
  • Students must have a minimum of 12 units at the college granting the Associate Degree.
  • For more information, contact the Counseling Office or go to http://studentweb.sdccd.edu/evaluations and click on the graduation link.
  • In order to graduate, you must fill out the petition to graduate.

Graduation Day

  • Graduates Check In: 11:00 am
  • Graduates Line Up: 12:30 pm
  • Procession Begins: 1:00 pm

The commencement ceremony lasts approximately 2 hours.

There will be a light refreshment reception following the commencement ceremony. Graduates and their guests are invited.

Guests should arrive early as seating is first come first seated basis.

Regalia and Commencement Attire

Graduation regalia will be the traditional black cap and gown with a teal tassel. Caps and gowns will be available for purchase from the Bookstore beginning April 9, 2014. Bookstore hours are 8 am–6:30 p.m. Monday–Thursday 8 am–12:00 p.m. on Friday or call (858) 536-7866 or (619) 388-7866. Regalia may also be purchased online at the College Bookstore. Since graduates and guests will be seated on a grassy area of compass Point, with a soft surface, wearing flat shoes is highly recommended in order to prevent potential injury. High heeled shoes present a safety hazard and can also ruin shoes.

Request for Accommodation

If you or your guest will need special accommodations, please contact the Evaluations Office (located within the Admissions Office) no later than Friday, May 2, 2014 at 12:00 noon. Special Seating and assistance will be available with prior notice.

Commencement Format and Processional

The ceremony will last approximately 2 hours. A very formal procession, by the stage party, faculty and students signifies the beginning of the ceremony. The processional is followed by formal speeches and the conferral of degrees. Personal congratulations are given to each graduate and their name is read as they walk across the stage to shake hands with the President and Board of Trustees.

Seating

Due to the increase in the number of students eligible for graduation as well as the popularity of commencement, reserved seating is not permitted and seating is available on a first come basis. If family members and friends choose to sit next to each other they must arrive together. Seating will take place immediately upon arrival.

Drinking and Smoking

San Diego Miramar College has a “No Alcohol” and “Non Smoking” Policy. Since this is a formal Miramar College event, drinking of alcoholic beverages and smoking of any kind are not permitted. Should any disruptive behavior take place at the San Diego Miramar College Commencement ceremonies, those individuals may be escorted from the ceremonies by College Police.

Photography

GradImages Photography will be taking photographs of each graduate on stage during the commencement ceremonies. Each graduate will be sent no-obligation proofs of the commencement photographs via email and text after the event. Proofs will also be sent via postal mail. You will have the opportunity to purchase prints after you have seen your proofs. At the ceremony, please ensure that you provide correct email and mailing information on the card you bring to stage from which your name will be announced.

Prior to the ceremony, visit their website, www.gradimages.com, and click on Pre-Event Email Registration. Enter your email and up to 6 emails who you would like to share in your accomplishment by allowing them to view and order your photos. If you have any questions about your commencement ceremony photographs, please visit www.gradimages.com or call toll-free 1-800-261-2576.

We ask that guests not disrupt the ceremony by taking photographs during the event. Parents and guests are not permitted on or near the stage to take photographs since this may impede graduates and others from fully appreciating the ceremonies on this special day. Standing at your seat, at any time, prevents those behind you from seeing their loved one graduate .Of particular importance is restraint from taking photos during the processional and recessional. The College has many beautiful locations for picture taking after the ceremonies.

Recessional

Members of the audience will remain seated until the ceremony has come to a final close and will not be permitted to leave prior to the recessional. One of the highlights of the event and a tradition at San Diego Miramar College is the Congratulatory Receiving line that takes place amongst the dignitaries, administrators, faculty and staff with the recent graduates.

Reception

All graduates and their families are invited to join together for light refreshments after the commencement ceremonies.

Flowers and Memorabilia

Flowers and commencement mementos will be available for purchase prior to and after the commencement ceremonies for your convenience -- as supplies last.
